As a student of Masters of Education program, I was taught about indigenous people and their culture in different course units. In Education Technology course ,I was taught about how to incorporate technology into deliver indigenous culture. ” The influx of new technology and methods of communicating are changing how we access knowledge. These digital technology are having an effect on cultural knowledge and communication and create new challenges for Indigenous communities”.(Steeves.C, 2015)
In a classroom there can be students from diverse background including indigenous students. So as a teacher, my task is to how to incorporate technology with indigenous ( traditional ) teaching practices to ensure that needs of every students are admitted. It helps in building inclusive learning environment for everybody. Further indigenous knowledge can be passed to young generations effectively. Following are some ways I can use to bring indigenous culture into classroom with technology.
- Use of Padlet to share stories- Instead of traditional story telling method students can share their personal or indigenous stories in online platforms
- Arrange virtual tours- create virtual tours related to indigenous topics in the curriculum and allow students to explore on different themes.
- Use of different apps to share indigenous knowledge -eg: story teller
- In my point of view, approaching indigenous knowledge through technology can be exciting for students and it will enhance their learning experience.
